Lachlan 'Magoo' Goold is one of the loveliest gents you'll meet in music. He's also one of the most highly respected and hard working record producers in Australia, and we were pretty stoked to have him swing by and chat with us for an hour or so about recording music. He has recorded most of the big names in Australian music over the years and what he doesn't know isn't worth knowing. If you're interested in a career as a music producer, or an artist/manager preparing to head into the studio, then these sessions are a must-see.
Dr Lachlan Goold, better known as Magoo is a two-time ARIA award-winning producer, engineer, and academic that has worked with an extensive list of Australian artists. Producing music since 1992 this list includes; Midnight Oil, Regurgitator, Powderfinger, Art Vs Science, Custard, The Cruel Sea, Renee Geyer, The Jungle Giants, Saskwatch, Tex Perkins and many more. Lachlan has produced more than 35 Triple J Hot 100 entries and his recordings have sold over 500 000 copies over this time. Lachlan is now the Head of Audio at JMC’s Brisbane campus.
Lachlan's lengthy career has involved working all over the country as a live sound engineer, and in Australia's most exceptional studios, in addition to co-owning and operating two studios—including a refurbished church retreat style studio. He continues to spend his time outside of JMC mixing recordings for established artists.
As an academic, Lachlan was awarded his PhD in early 2018. His PhD titled Space, Time, Creativity, and the Changing Character of the Recording Studio involved a thorough investigation into DIY recording and what is gained or lost in using the home as a recording space in direct comparison to the Large-Format studio. Lachlan presented aspects his research at IASPM in Mackay 2016 and the Art of Record Production in Stockholm, Sweden 2017.
