How can we trust you? Are you the real deal?
This is the real deal, motivated by decades of frustration in seeing people – bands, managers, bookers, labels – making the same mistakes over and over again and not seeing any viable “best practice” framework on offer to provide support and advice for emerging and mid-level musicians and industry workers.
Founder/director Martine has been working in music since the late 80’s, and proudly boasts the proverbial “portfolio of careers” lifestyle so common in the music industry. She has a large network of old and new music industry friends across the country through her work including:
- Managing & booking The Zoo in the second half of the 90’s
- Decades of festival work (producer, programmer, operations, staffing, stage/gate/rider management etc) at Splendour in the Grass, Livid, Big Day Out, Woodford Folk Festival, Jungle Love, BIGSOUND, QMA’s, Valley Fiesta, Little BIGSOUND, TEDx Brisbane, Australian Women in Music Awards, Laneway, Port Douglas Carnivale and more
- Sole-trader/contractor music services roles including band and venue booking agent, artist management, tour management, local promoter for national/international promoters, day manager for busy bands, mentor services
- Former Program Manager at QMusic, Queensland’s music industry organisation and part of the AMIN network alongside Music NSW, Music Victoria, Music NT, Music ACT, Music Tas and the mighty WAM!
- Conference speaker & workshop facilitator and speaker
- University Tutor
- ….and plenty of behind-the-scenes advocacy work
What do I get for my membership?

How do I become a member?
Just visit this page and follow the prompts!
How do I cancel my membership?
Easy peasy. Simply sign in, go to your account page and look under membership level – you will see the option to change or cancel your membership.
Are you an accredited, registered V.E.T. training organisation (R.T.O.)?
Luckily, accreditation is the last thing that’s on our minds. After school, ‘accreditation’ for a program can either be a line in size 10 font on your resume… Or it can show up in the way that you walk into a room. It can be something that you feel in the way you talk, in the way you make judgment calls, in the way you notice what other people miss. These things can’t be captured on paper. Whether you know it or not, they matter everyday to how people perceive you and how powerfully you show up in your workspace. (Thank you Seth Godin and the altMBA for these words).
I’m a music teacher/mentor myself, I’d like to organise discounted individual memberships for some of my students to your great site?
Yes, absolutely! We’ll happily provide a personal 20% discount voucher that you can offer your young padawans. We need to reward those young go-getters for having the gumption to reach out after all don’t we?!
I am a teacher – do you offer education discounts for schools or institutions, like Lynda.com?
We have a number of options for educators, and the more students you have, the cheaper it gets. We can also offer open IP access for school networks and unique member pages that track progress. The perfect curricular supplement! We like to be flexible in our arrangements with schools because we are so passionate to see the work we’ve created here to be used by as many young people as possible. Contact MusicIIO director, Martine Cotton directly on email@example.com, or our engagements manager, Jacqui Wirth at firstname.lastname@example.org – or check out our organisational memberships here.
What kind of organisations and institutions do you currently work with?
We have provided organisational memberships for QUT (Nationally), Music Tasmania, Music Industry College (Brisbane), The Gold Coast Conservatorium Seed and are also in discussions with a number of organisations and institutions to create the best possible partnership for each groups specific needs.
Do you offer any other services?
Yes, Music Industry Inside Out has partnered with a number of regional councils (Toowoomba Regional Council, Ipswich City Council) and community groups (Expressive Ground) to present weekly, monthly and 3 monthly workshop and panel programs for their communities.
MusicIIO founder and director, Martine Cotton also works as a music business mentor for emerging artists and managers.
I’d like to become a contributor!
If you have an idea for an article, and it’s specific to music and more importantly – the Australian/NZ music industry, we’d love to talk. We’ve had a heap of guest contributors and are always looking to broaden the scope of the blog and the diversity of content on offer. Email email@example.com to arrange something.
I’d like to request a new course topic or I’d like to request an interview with one of my industry role models.
Yes! Request away! If you see a gap that needs to be filled, please drop a line to firstname.lastname@example.org! She’d love to hear from you.
I’d like to do an interview for you.
If you know your stuff and want to share your knowledge, we would be delighted to interview you. We’ve done a few sessions via SKYPE but do prefer to do them in person just to guarantee a certain level of quality. Please email me at email@example.com.
Who are you?
MIIO was founded by Martine Cotton, a veteran music industry worker (venue manager & booker, artist manager, festival event manager and worker, local promotor, tour manager, educator and former QMusic program manager, event producer and mentor). You can read more about the team and project here and here.
MIIO is what could be called a ‘lean startup’, entirely self-financed. If you’re interested in helping us out in our mission to grow a best-practice framework and improve education and professional development in the music industry we’d love to hear from you! Email firstname.lastname@example.org or our engagements manager, email@example.com
