Our Man in Berlin’s Savvy Seven

Our Man in BerlinPerth’s Our Man in Berlin have spent several years exploring sounds and song writing techniques, however it was only 15 months ago in the writing of their WAM nominated single ‘Temaze’ that the band first found their musical identity. Our Man in Berlin produce songs comprised of two equal halves; glitchy, rhythmic, electronic production, and organic, ethereal, melody focused song writing. The debut EP ‘Is It Right?’ shows a band starting to hit their stride, with singles ‘Airhead’ and ‘Flight’ receiving airplay from Triple J and many community radio stations, as well as international attention from well known blogs such as Hilly Dilly and Hype Machine. The band’s lead vocalist Haydn Mansell took some time out to share some insight into the music industry.

1. The best live music venues in my area are…

Perth has a few great venues. I’ve always loved playing at; Amplifier, The Rosemount, Mojos, The Bird, The Odd Fellow, & The Bakery.

2. The music scene in Perth is…
It is what you make of it I guess. In my opinion a lot of great music comes out of Perth. I think a big part of that comes from the isolation. It’s pretty easy to lock yourself away and work on something until you’re happy with it.. And then once you’ve got something decent, there is definitely enough of a scene here to start playing gigs and putting your music out there.

3.My top tip for artists who self-manage is…
During busy periods it can be pretty easy to get stuck on emails and organising things. It’s really important that you maintain the ability to switch off from that stuff. Focusing on the music is still the priority and if you can’t switch off from the business side of things your creativity could suffer.

4. In my opinion, the most important issue facing the music industry is…
I try really hard not to think about the issues. Of course there are many, and the music industry is really hard. But at the end of the day, I write songs because I love doing it, I’m in a band because I couldn’t imagine not being in one. All the little things that make it hard don’t outweigh the good. I don’t want to get in to a frame of mind where I’m singling things out as being problems. I just want to make music.

5. When on the road, my favourite pit stops are…
I really love Brother Baba Budan for coffee in Melbourne. The Gasometer in Collingwood is a really cool bar/live music venue with amazing food. And Lefty’s Music Hall in Brisbane, it has heaps of rad scotches and a sweet atmosphere.

6. My biggest career mistake has been…
Who knows. I probably make 20 mistakes a day. I’m definitely flawed, and I have no doubt that those flaws directly impact my music career. But I kind of think that the songs come from the same part of my brain that the mistakes do..

7. My best advice for emerging artists is…
Do it because you love it. Everything else is irrelevant in the long run.
