Love Like Hate’s Savvy Seven

Love Like HateReturning home from a European tour with an exclusive signing with independent music giant Rough Trade Publishing (Violent Femmes, Le Tigre, Godspeed You Black Emperor!), Brisbane-based female ensemble Love Like Hate are set to deliver more of their signature pop darkness with the highly anticipated ‘Unnoticed’ EP. Released late last year, the first single ‘Electric Ships’ was well received by critics and fans alike and gave the duo the momentum they needed for their music to be received beyond  Australian shores, with shows across Europe (Paris, Berlin, London) including the sold out London Vegan Beer Festival. Working with Lachlan Mitchell [The Jezabels, Hard Ons], who produced their highly regarded Rabbit Hole EP, the duo seamlessly fuse melodic piano and grungy guitar. Beautifully erratic and sometimes intense, there is a romantically sadistic appeal to their sound that they coined ‘dark pop’. Love Like Hate took some time out to reflect on their music career and answer our Savvy Seven questions.

1. The best live music venues in my area are…
The Zoo in Fortitude Valley – it’s always about the music and we’ve seen a lot of our favourite artists there over the years. Also, Ric’s Bar as they have been supporting live music forever.

2. The music scene in Brisbane is…
Brisbane is always growing with new artists every month but it’s a challenge too because our music venues are getting fewer.

3. My top tip for artists who self-manage is…
Be organised and be prepared to have some really shitty times but not to give up!

4. In my opinion, the most important issue facing the music industry is…
It’s getting harder to make money from music as live venues are restricted more and more and everything is digital now, selling your track for a dollar on the internet that cost you a thousand dollars to make is hard going.

5. When on the road, my favourite pit stops are…
Anywhere that sells something healthy to eat, not just because I’m vegan but because sitting in a car with a gut full of grease doesn’t make the overnight stays in motels very pleasant.

6. My biggest career mistake has been…
Self doubt for too many years over analyzing the art and not just getting it out there and hoping for the best.

7. My best advice for emerging artists is…
Always be professional and never be afraid to ask.
