Kucka’s Savvy Seven

kucka 960x960

Born Laura Jane Lowther, KUČKA had already carved herself a foreboding presence in the underground at the onset of 2014 – releasing an EP on French imprint Nuun Records, being tipped as an Australian artist to watch by The Guardian, playing Laneway Festival in Perth and even being featured on A$AP Rocky’s Billboard #1 debut album; having her vocals sampled on smash single, “Long Live A$AP”, and contributing backing vocals to “Fashion Killa”.

Yet, she only truly pierced the public consciousness with the release of her beguiling single, “Unconditional”, on Inertia Access in May. The elegantly carnal, darkly synthetic slow-jam was instantly embraced by Triple J, RTR and FBI and earned KUČKA three 2014 West Australian Music Awards, including Best Single and Best Electronic Act. She was also named as one of the best artists at BIGSOUND by the likes of 4ZZZ and Double J, and featured guest artist on triple j Unearthed and TheMusic.com.au.

KUČKA – also consisting of Katie Campbell (aka Catlips) and Jake Steele (Tobacco Rat) in live form – are predictably seducing all who cross their path with their unique blend of forward thinking poptronica, and new single “Divinity” reinforces KUČKA’s unique star-turn – a preview of things to come on her second EP, due early 2015 on Midnight Feature, and next week hitting triple j with a full add.

3. My top tip for artists who self-manage is…

My top tip for artists who self-manage is don’t undersell yourself, you shouldn’t have to play gigs for free, especially as a more established artist.

4. In my opinion, the most important issue facing the music industry is…

…people underestimating the open-mindedness of music listeners. I think commercial radio stations and labels are scared that if they play left-field music they will lose listeners, but in reality I think people would embrace a change from the monotonous pop music that is the norm.

5. When on the road, my favourite pit stop is…

Hudson’s at Perth airport. Our tour slogan is Chai or Die.
