April 1 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Ten years ago, the Victorian music community was at a crossroads. Draconian liquor licencing laws resulting in increasing compliance costs led venues to cancel live music. The venerable Tote Hotel closed its doors.

On 23 February 2010, the music community banded together and marched to Parliament demanding the laws be repealed. Ten years on, Melbourne’s live music sector is once again thriving, boasting the highest number of venues per capita in the world.

At this special evening event, key players reflect on how the movement came together, and the impact it has had on the music sector and political agency in Victoria over the last ten years. With a panel moderated by Patrick Donovan, CEO of Music Victoria and former music writer of The Age, featuring:

  • Clare Bowditch – musician, author and broadcaster
  • Helen Marcou AM – SLAM Rally convenor and owner of Richmond’s famous Bakehouse Studios
  • Ben Eltham – arts writer and lecturer in the School of Media, Film and Journalism at Monash University
  • Peter Luscombe – musician (Paul Kelly, Rockwiz Orchestra), lecturer

Join us for a special cocktail event at one of Melbourne’s most beloved live music venues, The Toff in Town.
