Bobbu Alu’s Savvy Seven

BobbyAlu-MUSICIIO-SavvySeven-2015

As one of Australia’s top drummers touring the world for the past 6 years, it wasn’t until a few years ago he stepped out from behind the drumkit to take the mic. Swiftly making a name for himself Bobby Alu’s third-ever live show was at the Byron Bluesfest alongside the likes of Bob Dylan and BB King. Bobby & his band have enjoyed repeat invitations to Byron Bluesfest (2011/12), Woodford Folk Festival (2010/12), Nannup Festival (2011/13) & Island Vibe (2010/11/13), boosting an already stellar CV for this increasingly in-demand performing artist.

Joined by highly respected musicians Paulie B (The Beautiful Girls, George), Stewart Barry, Richie Seymour & Hua Hillman this crew gained instant cred with their island music inspired sound. A QLD Music Award, showcase at the Australasian World Music Expo (AWME), a semi‐finalist award in the International Songwriting Comp, & numerous major national festival performances are a few wins, however to them the real joy is sharing the uplifting music far and wide.

While taking a break from sticks and microphones, Bobby Alu changes rhythm to words as he gives us his savvy tips…

1. The best live music venues in my area are…

The Motor Room – New, free, in West End and attached to a rad market of food, and knick knacks. There’s also a bar. Say no more. Also, The Zoo: such a long history, forever changing, a Brisbane staple.

2. The music scene in Brisbane is…

Always on the UP. No matter what genre, there’s always good stuff coming out. QMusic is a great support and if a venue unfortunately shuts down, another opens.

3. My top tip for artists who self-manage is…

Know what you want, make sure you love it and work your arse off.

4. In my opinion, the most important issue facing the music industry is…

Hater’s. Stop being a hater. Everyone goes through the ups and downs. The ‘blamers’ are the ones that get left behind.

5. When on the road, my favourite pit stops are…

The ocean. West End Coffee House. The End Bar.

6. My biggest career mistake has been…

Putting others before myself.

7. My best advice for emerging artists is…

It’s a long road so enjoy the ride!
