Alpine’s Savvy Seven

Alpine are six friends from Melbourne who make bold, twinkling, sophisticated pop music. Their debut almost-self-titled record, A is for Alpine, is a collection of vibrant songs that shimmer and shine with colourful harmonies and inventive melodies – and they’re set to follow it up with their sophomore effort, Yuck, to be released on June 12. Featuring the dual vocals of front women Phoebe Baker and Lou James, Christian O’Brien on guitar, Ryan Lamb on bass, Tim Royall on keys and Phil Tucker on drums, Alpine traverse diverse themes, ideas and sounds on the album, always assured, but never quite taking themselves too seriously. In anticipation of their upcoming national tour, singer Phoebe Baker shared her Savvy Seven tips with us…

The best live music venues in my area are…

The Forum. It so darn magical inside and outside this building. It’s an aesthetic pleasure leisure time just to look at it. And to play a show amid grand Greek/Roman statues and underneath a roof that looks like the best dusky sky, well it’s just lovely! It’s nice to go and see a show or play a show in a building in which a lot of thought has been put into making a space that embraces ‘performance’.

The music scene in Melbourne is…

Constant. Friendly. Diverse. Surprising. Excellent.

My top business tip for new artists is…

Be true to you, duh. 😉

In my opinion, the most important issue facing the music industry is…

Bands not being able to sustain themselves financially. It’s hard to keep on doing something you love and want to make a career out of when you get a meagre income. Many musicians I know, including myself, have day jobs as well, and most day jobs don’t work well with sporadic unavailabilities. It’s a tricky ground to tread.

When on the road, my favourite pit stops are…

Supermarkets and rivers ie treats and peace.

My biggest career mistake has been…

Eating souvlaki before a gig.

My best advice for emerging artists is…

Be true to you. Uhuh 🙂
