The project is a heart-and-soul project of long-time music industry worker and former QMusic Program Manager, Martine Cotton. That’d be me. Like you, I’m trying to put a small positive dent in my corner of the universe.
My career in the music industry started way back in 1990, and I’ve worked in a wide range of roles including artist manager, manager + booker at iconic Brisbane live music venue The Zoo (1996 – 2000), Splendour in the Grass Staffing & Volunteers Manager/Gates Operations, event producer and manager (Queensland Music Awards 2012/13, BIGSOUND support 2012/13, UNConvention 2012, Port Douglas Carnivale 2009 – 2012, Tokyo Biz-Nites 2008/9, Tokyo Dr Sketchy’s 2007/9, Valley Fiesta 1999 – 2001, Woodford Folk Festival’s Oasis Stage and Contemporary Music Program Booker 1999 – 2002), local concert promoter 2000- 2002 (Billions, Handsome, etc), entertainment booker, tour manager, stage manager, music industry mentor + educator (University of Canberra‘s Bachelor of Contemporary Music Degree Course), website builder, social media management, and professional photographer.
As part of my former role as Program Manager at QMusic, I traveled across regional Queensland and met hundreds of artists, bands and young entrepreneurs hungry for knowledge on how to build and maintain a sustainable career working in the music industry, and quickly realised that there is a national shortage of easily-accessible, authentic, contemporary professional development information available for the music industry.
I’ve used educational websites extensively myself while based in Tokyo and Far North Queensland to help develop my photography, internet technology and web-coding skills. While living in Tokyo (2002 – 2009), I struggled to find educational content in English and resorted to purchasing accounts at American based websites like CreativeLIVE and Lynda.com to hone my skills. I continued using those sites after relocating to remote Far North Queensland, and continue to passionately espouse the incredible value of the internet in providing the perfect on-demand platform for busy people in regional/remote areas and urban centres to improve professional development skills.
Passionate about growing the capacity of the music industry to build genuine sustainable careers, I believe that ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’, and a well-informed industry will inevitably improve its own sustainability.
And so, Music Industry Inside Out was born.
