Session Three: Your Assets

As a Creative, your Intellectual Property is your most important asset, from your name, to your brand to your products and work. Suzanne Derry from Arts Law will step you through the essential art of protecting your IP.

Few industries are as resourceful as those in the creative sector, yet we can all do with some advice on managing money. Daniel Merza from YCG looks at the must know finance facts for surviving and thriving as a sole trader, small business or creative collaboration.


Suzanne Derry is the Senior Solicitor at the Arts Law Centre of Australia. Suzanne has worked for a number of community legal centres and a boutique entertainment law practice. Suzanne provides legal advice on copyright, contract, defamation, debt and business structures. Suzanne enjoys educating artists about their rights and providing practical advice across a range of arts areas.

Simon Joyce has over 12 years of audit and advisory experience with ‘big four’ and mid-tier firms, including eight years in senior positions at Deloitte. Over this time, he has developed a specialisation and passion for working with both private businesses and not-for-profit entities.


Arts Law is Australia’s independent national community legal centre for the arts, a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. Arts Law provides free or low cost specialised legal advice, education and resources to Australian artists and arts organisations across all art forms on a wide range of arts related legal and business matters.

Night School for Creatives

Over four Wednesday evenings in winter, the City of Sydney will be inviting industry experts to share their knowledge with local arts, cultural and creative businesses. This is an opportunity to up-skill and maximise your competitiveness in the arts and creative industries. You’re invited to attend as many sessions as you like, but please remember, spaces are limited and you must book for each session you wish to attend.
